We first met Gladys in March 2020 when she came to our local surgical camp at Kabudula Community Hospital. After assessing the large goiter, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, the team established that she would need to be treated at a larger facility.
We arranged for Gladys to receive surgery at Daeyang Luke Hospital in Lilongwe in January. Daeyang Luke had the ventilator she needed during the procedure due to the size and pressure being exerted by the goiter.
AHA is very proud to have provided the coordination and sutures for Gladys’s treatment, while our close partner World Altering Medicine (WAM) sponsored the procedure.
We also met Marita in March 2020 when she attended the same local surgical camp at Kabudula Community Hospital. Marita’s goiter was smaller, so she didn’t need any pre- or post-op medication and the other half of her thyroid continues to function without issue.
Big shoutout to WAM, which also sponsored some of the costs of Marita’s treatment. AHA coordinated with Nkhoma Mission Hospital, provided transportation to Nkhoma, and provided follow up care at Kabudula Community Hospital.
We just love seeing patients like Gladys and Marita smile after successful procedures. We know their outlook on life is changed by procedures that wouldn’t be possible without organizations like AHA and WAM.
