The Facts in Malawi
Less than 13% of the government’s budget is allocated to healthcare, resulting in a shortage of healthcare professionals, adequate facilities, and quality care.
Seven percent of children in Malawi die before their fifth birthday.
There is one physician per 53,000 Malawians.
There is one surgeon per 1,000,000 Malawians.
Every year, 90% of those who provide surgery to more than 50,000 Malawians are not surgeons.
Over 45,000 Malawians receive surgeries every year from people who aren't trained in surgery, much less certified surgeons.
The National Association of Nurses in Malawi (NONM) estimates that four nurses are lost to an HIV/AIDS related illness every month. This is a terrible drain on the country’s healthcare system.
Although funding for healthcare has increased in Malawi in recent years, there are simply not enough trained staff available to meet the country’s needs.
